Something Simple

Despite it being a holiday, today has not been a good day. Lately, life seems to be filled with more complications and frustrations than I can handle. In many ways, it’s good to have my watercolor. At times it provides a welcome distraction from problems with health insurance, disrespectful tenants, and a whole gamut of other issues we’re dealing with.

Sometimes, though, watercolor painting itself can be troublesome, adding to the general sense of exasperation I’m feeling.

Today was one of those days.

I did not one, but four different watercolors today, finding fault with each painting I finished or, in the case of one painting, putting it aside to finish another time.

The first was another mountain scene with a peaceful lake. I didn’t like it. Next was a rocky river bank with lots of leafy trees. I liked it better, but I was still not satisfied with it. I started a third, quickly decided it wasn’t anything I wanted to finish today, so with the afternoon growing short — my patience growing short, as well — I opted for something simple.

Watercolor 160705 Tree in SummerA tree.

One tree.

Plain and simple.

On the plus side, my foliage is getting better, and I’m doing better at creating the illusion of distant woods. At least, I think I’m doing better.

On the down side, I’m not quite getting the shape of my trees right yet. This one is far too short and stubby for the thick trunk. In fact, the more I look at it, the less I like it.

But, there isn’t time for any more watercolor painting today.  I will keep working on my trees, learning to put them together bit by bit.

And maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

  1. I imagine we’ve all had those kind of days with our painting. I know I have! I hope whatever else is troublesome in your life settles soon for you. Likely adding to your overall frustration. Take care Judith! And the trees very lovely

    1. I’m glad you enjoy it. I think we’re hard on ourselves because what we do doesn’t measure up to what we “saw” in our heads. I imagine how I want a painting to look…when it doesn’t turn out that way, I’m disappointed.

  2. ah! the inner critic at work! I hate that….I have had too many days of that and I sympathize with you. But I see some building of depth, even a shadow…you are moving forward every time I see one of your paintings. Remember not to critically judge your movement forward, it is literally a step at a time. Don’t forget to be kind to yourself 🙂

    1. Thank, Margaret. Overall, yesterday held so many frustrations — not with art but with life. All those discouraging feelings carried over to my art. Today’s been a busy day, too, so I don’t know how my painting will turn out 🙂

  3. When you are in a better mood, look at it again. Look at how well the colors graduate on the trunk, the nice greens you mixed, the depth from the background foliage to the tree…that kind of stuff. The short stubby trunk thing isn’t what I focused on. I didn’t even notice till you pointed it out and even then I said…well, I guess…maybe? Bah! Look at those graduating colors on the trunk.

    1. Thanks, Dawn, for the encouraging words. There’s a lot in this simple painting that shows progress, I know. Overall, I was so frustrated yesterday I just wanted to finish a painting that might make me feel better. An impossible task. I could have painted a genuine masterpiece yesterday and I still would have hated it 🙂 Just one of those days.

    1. Thank you. You should see some of the trees I painted in the past LOL. Or the ones I drew in graphite. They definitely looked like something a 6-year-old would do. I’m glad that I am making some progress.

  4. Sorry that you are having a bad day. I hope everything settles down before the day ends. We all have difficult days and sometimes we want the day to go so fast so we can start anew…but in the middle of it all, few like you find joy. That is already something to smile about. Its a blessing few people see. And that young tree, its beautiful. Your blessing for today. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Carrie. Life has just dealt us a big hand of frustration lately. Usually I can look at the brighter side of things and stay optimistic. Sometimes, though, things really get me down. Yesterday was definitely one of those days 😦

  6. I rather like this tree. It’s lovely your inner critic must shush! 🙂 Your improvement is worth more of your attention and praise. I’m sorry things aren’t going well in other areas. I hope all clears up soon. {Hugs}

    1. Thanks! Those hugs mean a lot. It’s been a rough weekend with a lot of problems to deal with, but I’m hoping things will get better now. I’m glad you like my stubby little tree 🙂

  7. I agree with Sissh, I like this tree too! I’m sorry life is getting in the way, it’s bound to happen sooner or later, but it always bounces out and the road will be going uphill again soon. I found last July when I painted daily in wc as even more of a beginner than I (still) am now that if I sat down to paint in a bad mood, it would show in my work. Not sure if that’s true of the medium or just with me, but maybe you’re seeing that too. However, I really like your tree and they’re not easy subjects at all. Great shading, as Dawn said. Rome wasn’t built in a day. ❤

    1. Thanks. Yes, a down-hearted mood easily carries over into everything we do, painting included. Art does provide a good distraction from some of life’s frustrations though. I’m taking a little “summer break” from a lot of my art work and just focusing on watercolor right now. Things are really busy for me, so I just don’t have time for it all. I miss the figure drawing and other things and look forward to getting back to it. I’m sure that will improve my mood greatly!

      1. It is a great distraction, honestly it has probably saved my life a time or too dealing with all of my food problems, etc. and just getting over-the-top frustrated. It is a savior, for sure. Watercolor is a tough mistress, I find. I haven’t wanted to throw my paintbrush yet this month, but last year, oh yes. Many times. I find sitting down to wc upset flows through my work but sitting down to acrylic or drawing upset……I actually wind up feeling better afterward. Maybe I’m just more comfortable in those mediums? Things will settle down soon, take care.

      2. You’re right…a lot depends on how comfortable we feel with a particular medium. For me, sitting down and drawing would probably be the most relaxing thing I could do, and that’s probably why I miss it right now. I do want to take time for watercolor every day, and right now, that’s really all I can manage. I appreciate all the good thoughts!

  8. It’s nice to have something to turn to when things aren’t going well. For us, it’s art! But, yes, sometimes art creating art can be frustrating, too. Whenever I have days like that, I just let go of the brush or pencil and do something else, like play video games or goof around with the kids.

I hope everything is better now. Your tree paintings are getting better and better, by the way.
