Something Quick

Even though this post is going live on Sunday morning, it’s actually Saturday evening as I’m writing this. First, I want to apologize to anyone who’s visited my blog, left a comment, and not heard back from me. We were on the road from about 7 AM until a very short time ago. Our plan for today was a fun time with my husband’s family in south Missouri. We were nearly there when I got a call that my sister was sick and had been taken to the emergency room. She’s in an assisted living facility in St. Joseph, Missouri, which is in the northern part of the state.

We drove on to Osceola, dropped off the food we were bringing, then turned around and made the trip north. After spending some time with my sister in the emergency room — she’s being admitted to the hospital now — we finally headed back home.

Needless to say, I’m exhausted. I looked at my watercolors and nearly shook my head. But this is World Watercolor Month, so instead of walking past the table, I decided to do something quick.

I have a new watercolor book by David Bellamy, and I’ve been admiring many of the paintings he’s done with a very, very limited palette. I took a cue from that and used ultramarine, Payne’s gray, and a tiny touch of burnt sienna. My intent was to create an almost “black and white” look.

All in all, I’m happy with the result. I took it off the block and scanned it before the painting was even completely dry, and that’s all right. I just want to stretch out and relax now. We’ll be going to St. Joseph again tomorrow, so again, I may not be around to respond to any comments until later.

Here’s my quick black and white effects watercolor — with a little burnt sienna added.

  2. Hoping that your sister gets better…..how stressful for you lately. At least you are back home. I love your trees….especially that cool affect on that tree on the right. That affect gives dimension….I remember you saying that you want to get better at trees and I am seeing that! well done.

    1. Thanks, Margaret. I’ll probably be driving back and forth to St. Joseph for several days — she was admitted and no idea yet how long she’ll be there — so it’s good to have watercolor as a way of relaxing each day. I’m feeling better about my trees. 🙂

  3. Sending well wishes for your sister, Judith. I hope she feels better today. Your painting does not look hurried at all. Its wonderful that you chose to use only three colors and played and the result were a lovely set of trees.

    1. Thank you. They’re doing a CAT scan today — abdominal issues — and surgery is a possibility. Awaiting further updates from the hospital. Your good thoughts are appreciated.

  4. These trees… are… EPIC! So surreal and dreamy… it makes me want to climb up and see if I can find some creatures living up in there.

I hope your sister is better now. Sending you good vibes!
