What a Job!

Yesterday was a very busy day.  The mess in my little kitchen studio was getting out of hand. I couldn’t take it any longer. So, I headed to Wal-Mart, spent $20.00 on a storage bin with drawers, came home, and cleaned up my art area.

It’s still a bit of a mess to have in our kitchen, but it’s definitely an improvement over how it looked before.

I have my oil paints in the top drawer, brushes in another, and miscellaneous painting supplies in the bottom. There’s room behind my easel to store large containers such as thinner and oils.

This isn’t going to be an ideal set-up, I know. It will be a bit inconvenient to get my palette and paints out, but I’m hoping it will make me more aware of my actions as I begin and end each painting session. Mostly, of course, I want to prevent the unsightly mess I had before. No, I didn’t take any before pictures, and even if I had, I would never have posted them here.

It would be nice to have a dedicated art studio. If I could, I’d have a huge room with lots of north light. It would be warm — but not too warm. I would have several different easels, a place to store canvas panels, and a place to keep finished paintings as they were drying. I would have a table with all my paints and brushes close at hand. I’d have a sink for clean-up. And since I’ve become so accustomed to painting in my kitchen, I’d probably want a small stove and refrigerator for snacking!

While I’m daydreaming about my ideal art studio, I’ll go ahead and dream that it’s off in a small wooded area with a little stream nearby. I’d no doubt have easels sitting outside, too, so I could step out to do plein air painting without a lot of fuss and bother.

It would be nice, but it’s not going to happen any time soon, I know. So, for now, I’ve learned to be quite comfortable in my kitchen studio. It’s not perfect, but neither is my art.

A lot of life is learning to make-do with what we’ve got. I’m thankful for my little corner of the kitchen.

What would your ideal art studio look like?

  1. Art can happen anywhere, right?, but it is necessary to have a dedicated area to keep your supplies and be ready to create at anytime. Your creative studio is small but wonderful art is happening here. I have a small studio area too, but I like having everything close at hand.

    1. I’m one of those people who needs a bit of structure and organization — otherwise my creative brain goes in too many different directions, making it impossible for me to function. I hope cleaning up my space will lead to increased productivity for me.

  2. I feel you. I am fortunate to have a spare bedroom for my toy collecting and art stuff. I have an entire six drawer dresser full of art stuff lol.

  3. My fantasy is to convert our upstairs playroom/bonus room into an art studio – it does get lots of north light, but I would supplement with good lighting and I would work hard to arrange ALL my art supplies so they are at my fingertips and yet, stored and in order (lots of see thru plastic containers, i’m thinking!)…..and yes, more than one easel, for sure! ….. Maybe when my kids start to move out! 😉 I agree with you, Judith, I think we all learn to be comfortable in whatever space we do have and I am pretty attached to my messy little art studio/spare room, in spite of its failings it does allow me to leave stuff out in a certain way that works for me!

    1. It’s sometimes a struggle, but I know how important it is for me to have things fairly well organized — yet still convenient. And thank goodness, it’s not as messy now as it was before.

  4. Funny I should see this post today. My youngest is moving out this week, and after dreaming for years about making her room my art studio, I am not sure yet of how I want to set it up now! LOL!! But I will take my time figuring it out. My current place is in our son’s old room, but now my husband has taken part of it to do podcasting, so now we will both have our own creative spaces soon. 😁

    1. How wonderful to have a real “room of your own” for your art. Yes, take your time, make it work for you, and enjoy every moment you spend there!
