I’m sitting here looking at a watercolor painting I completed a few minutes ago. It’s not even dry yet, but I’m absolutely amazed at what I’m seeing.
I painted this, and it’s beautiful. I don’t know how I did it, but I painted this.
It’s watercolor. I’m not good at watercolor, and yet I painted this.
It’s on a sheet of drawing paper, not watercolor paper. That’s where I sketched it out, so that’s where I painted it.
It’s not technically perfect, I suppose, but oh, my goodness! I painted this lady in green. I painted her, added in a few shadows in the right places, and I captured her look, her expression, her pose.
I’ve never painted anything quite so beautiful before. I’ve never painted anything before that so clearly makes me believe that I really have become an artist, that I really can create paintings and portraits that are lovely to look at.
I plan to do more watercolor portraits, and I’m doubting that any will ever come out quite so nice, so for now I just want to sit here, look at my hauntingly-beautiful “Lady in Green,” and think to myself… I painted this.
It’s superb.- you should be thrilled:)

Thank you! I was so happy with this! I love doing portraits but… with watercolor? That was a real challenge. I’m going to try doing another monochrome portrait today. Concentrating only on values really helped immensely, of course. I’m getting excited with art right now, as you can tell. It’s really getting to be a lot of fun again. 🙂 Of course, having my own studio makes a world of difference.

The side profile was much easier than the front-facing ones I tried yesterday, but even with those I am making progress. I’m learning to work larger and looser, and I’m going to be doing a few portraits in charcoal, too. It’s been a while since I’ve done much of anything with charcoal. It’s a medium I enjoy, although I don’t care much for the mess. 🙂

Thank you so much! Today’s monochrome portraits didn’t turn out quite as good as the first one, but I’m seeing possibilities. I’m definitely getting better with watercolor. 🙂
