Just What I Needed

I love blogging. I don’t love the new WordPress “block editor”, but never mind that. I suppose, in time, I’ll get used to it.

As a fairly well-seasoned blogger now — Artistcoveries has been around since March 2016 — I not only love writing and posting, but also traveling around the blogosphere and finding awesome new blogs. I’ve made many good friends that way, and I’m always happy to share any advice or inspiration I can with others.

A few days ago I discovered Tips and Beyond, a fairly new blog that offers ideas for success, self-esteem, and more. Unlike a lot of blogs with long-winded posts about what to do or not to do, Tips and Beyond gives you information you need in a short, sweet, simple, succinct way. I love it.

I was especially taken by a recent post about organization. My studio, you see, has once again become a disaster area. My husband is working on the spa. I’m trying to sort out my arts and crafts areas and make them more accessible. As usual, I have several projects going on. So, I eagerly read the tips about how we can stay organized even when we’re busy.

Here are the six simple tips you need to know:

  • Write down everything
  • Make a schedule
  • Make and keep deadlines
  • Don’t procrastinate
  • Know where to discard items
  • Keep only what you need

Now, at the risk of letting this turn into one of those long-winded posts, I want to add a few quick thoughts about these six tips.

Yes, write things down. The busier I am, the more I need to follow this tip. While I’m working in the studio, I’m also juggling regular “housewife” duties — keeping track of grocery-list items, remembering dates for my husband’s visits to the retinologist, making note of dates for art club meetings. I haven’t been attending our meetings due to the pandemic, but I still keep in touch with members and follow along with activities.

Yes, too, on having a schedule. I’ve been through a lot of overwhelm lately with art, so for me, this is especially important now. I’ve gotten into the habit of writing down my daily to-do list each morning. Checking items off one by one gives me a sense of satisfaction.

Deadlines? Well, yes, no, and maybe. If you have projects that need deadlines, it’s a good idea to stay aware of them. For my personal projects and practices, I don’t like a lot of hard-and-fast deadlines. I keep in mind, though, what I want to accomplish and I do set rather relaxed deadlines. Giving myself a bit of breathing room helps me stay calm when life gets too hectic. I’d add to this that it’s about priorities. Focus on what’s most important.

Procrastination? We all know how to beat that, don’t we? Just dive in and do whatever needs to be done. Even if you’re not “in the mood” to be creative, jump in anyway. As often as not creativity comes as soon as we start working on a project.

It was the next two items on the list that really helped me. They go hand-in-hand. Know where to discard things and keep only what you need.

This was exactly what I needed to hear, exactly when I needed to hear it. Earlier I’d been fussing about the mess in my studio, but I’ve been so busy when would I ever have time to clean it up? My husband had even brought home a new trashcan — just for my art studio — so now I have no excuse. I know where to discard things!

I’ll admit to keeping a lot of things I don’t need — because I’m using lots of left-overs for my art journal project — but I’m working on tossing out things that truly have no purpose.

I know I’ll never have a neatly-organized art studio, but I can do better than I have in the past. Even when I’m busy, I can follow these tips and make my studio a place where I can find what I need, and do what I love.


    1. I haven’t found a way to switch to the classic editor without a plug-in… and since I have a “free site” I can’t use plug-ins. I’ve tried using the “classic block” (which is similar) but it’s still not as easy as the old way. If it’s possible to use the classic editor for a free site, please tell me where to find the information on how to do it!

      1. As far as I know, the only way I could switch back to the “classic” editor would be by using the “plug-in”, and while that would be nice, I’m not going to change to a paid site right now. I’m just muddling through, learning a little more about the new block editor, and trying different things. I just wish they would leave it alone!


  1. I find it very hard to throw things away. For one thing, there is no away. For another, it all could come in handy some day, scraps of this and that… I even took stuff out of the trash for a project.
    As far as I know, I use the old editor, I never did change, but I don’t know how to get back to it in your case. Sorry.

  2. Hah! Love the trashcan. ^_^ And organization is one of the best motivators ever for creative inspiration, imo. I have a tiny space for doing everything that I do, so if I was overwhelmed with clutter or left my creative messes all over the place, I wouldn’t have any space to do anything new or anything else. Plus, I love knowing exactly where to find what I’m looking for and being able to tell at a glance if something needs replenishing. It’s kind of like walking into a clean kitchen to cook something, versus walking into a kitchen that needs cleaning before cooking. By the time all the dirty dishes and counters are clean, the energy is spent. And you remember too late that you should have been cooking those beans for the past 2 hours, so take-out is preferred. LoL …

    1. I’m fortunate now to have a bigger space for my art, but it’s still important for me to keep it fairly clutter-free. I absolutely CANNOT cook in a messy kitchen. I have to have everything clean and uncluttered, and that carries over to my art studio. It’s easy to make messes here, and it’s tempting to leave the mess, but then it gets TOO messy, and I can’t function. So, yes, the trashcan is a true blessing. It makes it much easier to pick up after myself. Next, I want to re-group my art supplies. I’m working on that now. It’s very helpful to have “groups” — like all my graphite and charcoal drawing supplies in one area, and all my watercolor supplies in their own area. Slowly but surely I’m getting the studio together in a way that’s comfortable and productive for me.

    1. It just seems so inconvenient, having to pull up a new “block” for anything I want to do, and what I hate most is when I go to schedule a post, it doesn’t show me what posts are already scheduled!

      1. Yeah, I don’t schedule posts, so I can’t speak to that, but have had some issues with the blocks. Especially trying to get rid of blocks I accidentally put in without messing up everything else!

      2. I’m starting to get used to it, so writing a post isn’t quite as frustrating now, but I still don’t like it. I’m sure it has lots of new bells and whistle features that I might like if I knew how to use them. 😦 I guess I’ll just keep playing around and see what I can figure out.   3. You must be a very busy person, Judith. I hope you can find time to relax while you write too. Or writing does make you relaxed so I’m sorry for that. πŸ™‚ Anyway, nice post. Did you draw the trash can art? Looks cute.
