Since we’re celebrating our feathered friends today for Draw-a-Bird-in-July day, I painted a rather whimsical winged creation. I wanted to create a soft, feathery effect, so I started by putting down a rather mottled wash with a deep yellow.
Next I painted the bird in ultramarine, then added in orange feathers and a bit of orange for the underbelly.
I did the complete painting very quickly wet-in-wet, allowing the lines to blur. It’s not intended to be a real species of bird, only a fanciful bird from my own imagination. I hope you enjoy it.
Beautiful and feathery Judith! Soft and pretty.

I like your little imaginary bird in flight. He is workin it! He is making me tired with all that flapping! For some reason I just made a bwack noise.

It is fun to play with color and yay for not making mud with blue and orange! You’re learning to tame the WC beast! Congratulations, Judith! I like your fanciful bird. 💙

Yassssss! This reminds me a little bit of the Sarimanok, a legendary Philippine bird. The wet-on-wet technique really works well, giving it that hazy, dreamy look. I love it when an artist creates something entirely out of their imagination. Great job!

Thanks so much. I’d never heard of the Sarimanok before but now that I’ve looked it up, I have to agree that there’s a bit of a resemblance. It is fun to just follow our imagination, isn’t it!
